Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.
Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers over at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.
This week’s topic is a freebie. It’s up to me what I put as my top ten this Tuesday.
My topic for this week is: Top Ten Characters I Can’t Stand
Have you ever read a book and absolutely DESPISED a character? Wondered why the author couldn’t make something terrible happen to them just to shut them up or make them disappear from the story for the rest of the novel? I have these characters. There are some that I want killed off practically as soon as they arrive on scene. Here are ten of my most despised
Joffery from A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
Holden Caufield from A Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salanger
America Singer from The Selection by Kiera Cass
Violetta from The Reverants series by Amy Plum.
-Ever since watching Interview with the Vampire when I was younger – immortal beings in the bodies of children REALLY FREAK ME OUT.
The White Queen from Nameless by Lili St. Crow
Elizabeth from Spellcaster by Claudia Gray
Abby Abernathy and Travis Maddox from Beautiful Disaster
Charles from the Heiresses by Allison Rushby
Daemon from The Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Umbridge from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
So that’s my TTT for this week. Are there any horrible characters that you think I’ve missed? Any that you agree on. Feel free to comment – I love hearing from everyone.
A huge YES to Charles and America! While I enjoyed getting to read The Selection and The Elite (and am excited to see how everyone ends up in The One), I really, really disliked America!
Thanks for stopping by my TTT post! 🙂
Alice @ Alice in Readerland
I feel the same way! I can’t wait to read The One – but America really grates on me. I feel she’s a little unbelievable in terms of her being a 5 and having to work so so hard for everything and then how she acts now. It’s not really consistent. She bugs me. I want Maxon to pick Kriss… and then Aspen to run off with Celeste… but that will never happen.
Immortal beings in kids, oh gosh I know what you mean. So frightening. Or even evil kids in general, seems so… wrong. Ha. Fun top ten!

Joffrey is awful! I agree about Umbridge, too. I loathe Beautiful Disaster and those characters, too!
my Top Ten
Haha, Joffrey is indeed the most horrible character of all time! America is in The Elite also quite annoying.. Did not like that book.
My Top Ten Tuesday (YA Book Series):
Eveline’s Books
Umbridge YES!! I have done a post on most irritating characters but for the life of me can’t remember who they are now… There are definitely a lot of them though.
Yes! GREAT list. I really disliked America too. I hated her from the moment she yelled at Prince Maxon in The Selection. Get over yourself, America.
I’m glad you found a topic! This is a good one, I feel like I could put almost every supporting character in books on here. For some reason supporting characters always drive me over the edge. And OH MY GOD I agree about Abby and Travis from Beautiful Disaster. I do not understand the appeal of either of them.
Thanks for visiting my blog!
Yes Umbridge! I DETESTED that woman! She still makes my skin crawl just to think about her. I also feel this way about Adri from Cinder / scarlet, a few characters for the horrible discriminating people in Incarnate / Asunder, and Vaughn in Wither. Horrible, horrible individuals. Great topic choice! My TTT.
Vyki @ On The Shelf
Oh, gosh, UMBRIDGE. I hated her! And Catcher in the Rye is a terrible book. Ugh.
My TTT post
Ugh, I HATED Umbridge with a passion. She’s definitely an awful character. Great topic!
Holden Caufield yes! So obnoxious. And another one like him is Duddy from The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. I realize that some characters have to be jerks, but I hate it when it’s the main character. It makes me feel like I’ve wasted precious reading hours on somebody who just isn’t worth it. Good idea for a top ten list though!
Umbridge is definitely one character that I cannot stand. I think it’s the cats and pink!
I’ve also nominated you for a Sunshine award here: http://thethousandlives.wordpress.com/2013/05/30/sunshine-award/
I love your blog, and the fact that you showcase more than the newest fad in young adult fiction!
Yes to Joffrey! Hate that kid, I hope he (fictionally) dies. Absolutely agree with Umbridge!! I loved HP5 because JKR has all these scenes where Harry goes all caps, and it just seemed so RIGHT for his life and where he’s at.
Also, every time I read “Pride and Prejudice” or watch the Kiera Knightly version, the Lydia character makes me crazy. She’s such a brat! (Of course, Jane Austen obliges us there and writes her out, so it works out.)
