Top Ten Tuesday: Books You’ll Like If You Like What I Like

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers over at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.

The topic for this week is:  Top Ten Books If You Like X tv show/movie/comic/play etc. (basically any sort of other entertainment)

This is a bit of a different topic because I don’t normally think in terms like this. I do watch a lot of TV and movies and looking at my shelf of DVDs, this is what I’ve come up with…

If you liked Firefly for the sci-fi, the great interactions between great characters, the touch of romance and the spaceships, try:

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. (Click here to read my reviews for Cinder, Scarlet and Cress)

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. (Click here to read my review for These Broken Stars)

Why?: The Lunar Chronicles is a sci-fi adventure series featuring characters I couldn’t get enough of and set in a world which maybe shouldn’t make sense – but somehow works perfectly. These Broken Stars is also set in space but has adventure, arguing characters and -after finishing the first book – I just want more!

If you liked Frozen for the charming take on classic fairy tales, try:

Ella Enchanted The Snow Queen

Ella Enchanted by Gail Levine Carson

The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson

Why?: Ella Enchanted is a story about a girl who was gifted with the curse of obedience. At first it may look like a Cinderella story but there’s a lot more there and in many ways Ella reminds me of Anna from Frozen – both strong females who don’t give up just because things get complicated. The Snow Queen is a classic fairy tale which Frozen was based upon. It’s different from other Hans Christian Anderson stories I’ve read in the past and I really enjoyed it.

If you liked Gossip Girl for the opulent lifestyles, the fashion and the teen’s antics, try:

The Secret Diamond Sisters (The Secret Diamond Sisters, #1) The A-List (A-List, #1) The Au Pairs (The Au Pairs, #1)

The Secret Diamond Sisters by Michelle Madow. (Click here to read my review for the Secret Diamond Sisters)

The A-list series by Zoey Dean

The Au Pairs series by Melissa de la Cruz

Why?: Okay, so I know this show was based on a book series but I only read the first book whereas I watched every episode of the show. It’s full of privileged teens with lots of money and very little adult supervision. For me each of these books sort of fit that theme.

If you’re hooked on True Blood for the creatures, the romance and the drama and you want more, try:

A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1)

Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole

The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward

The Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep

The Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead

Why?: Another show which was originally based on a book but after the first season, the show diverged a little and became darker and grittier than the original novels.

All four series I suggested here are paranormal and urban fantasy novels. Immortals After Dark and The Black Dagger Brotherhood each feature different featured characters in each novel but follow and overall story arc across novels. There are big bad enemies to defeat and some dark, brooding heroes to swoon over. The Elemental Assassin series has a kick-arse heroine with attitude and I love to read about her. Georgina Kincaid is a succubus with a conscience and associates with demons, vampires and other supernatural creatures.

You might disagree with my suggestions. But these are things I have liked and consider to be somewhat in the same realm. Also – if anyone has any ideas of what I should read to try to get myself out of my Veronica Mars rut (I’ve been re watching my old DVDs since seeing the movie. I still love her), I’d be much appreciative!

Which books do you recommend based on your favourite TV shows?

  1. Cinder and These Broken Stars! <33 I tried watching an episode of True Blood before but got bored. I wasn't fan of the novel, either, but Kresley Cole, JR Ward and Jennifer Estep are on my to-read list. I definitely have to check out Mead's adult series!

  2. I’m not even sure if I can call myself a Joss Whedon fan since I haven’t watched Firefly ahhhh. But those books you followed up with certainly have been sitting on my tbr pile for a while now. Glad to hear the relation! (And also: you had me sold at Frozen…)
