Top Ten Tuesday: Books People Tell Me I MUST Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers over at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.

The topic for this week isTop Ten Books People Have Been Telling You That You MUST Read (whether because they think it’s a “you” book or it’s just been generally recommended so often)

I get quite a few book recommendations. Sometimes they are from people I know well other times they are from virtual strangers.

The other day I was at the dentist on the chair during a routine check-up and the dentist was chatting away about books. Wanted to know if I’d heard of those Divergent books because her daughter was a fan.

Book recommendations come from everywhere and here a ten books/series that I’ve been recommended the most.

From My Family:

The Conqueror series by Conn Iggulden (from my brother. In an effort to get me away from teen vampire books [my brother is under the misconception that those are all I read. I would disagree but considering I’m currently reading a teen vampire book I don’t really have a leg to stand on.] he often recommends I read Conn Iggulden. I have to admit I am tempted but these books all are intimidatingly huge page wise.)

Genghis: Birth of an Empire (Conqueror, #1)

Mao’s Last Dancer by Li Cunxin (from my grandmother. She passed away a few weeks ago but for the past ten or so years she’s recommended this book to me. She bought me a copy because her friends were all buying copies for their grandchildren and I read it. I really enjoyed it. My grandmother did grow forgetful in her later years and bought me two more copies not realizing that she had already gotten me one. I can completely understand why she kept wanting me to read it because it is a great book)

Mao's Last Dancer

The Miffy series by Dick Bruna (from my niece. She’s two. She likes picture books. Her newest word is RABBIT! and I have a feeling Miffy might have a thing or two to do with that.)

Miffy in the snow

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy (from my sister. I gave a copy of this book to my sister and she really enjoyed it. I should probably try to finish reading it so I know what she’s talking about.)

The 5th Wave (The Fifth Wave, #1)

From Book Bloggers:

The Sky So Heavy by Claire Zorn (I love the look of this book. I even bought a copy – and then left it on a train. To the person who found it, I hope you enjoyed it! This book seems to be discussed in every #OzYAChat and each fortnight I find myself cursing that I could have been as careless as to lose my brand new copy!)

The Sky So Heavy

The Giver by Lois Lowry (Because of the movie, I’ve seen this one talked about more and more lately. And apparently it’s the first book in a quartet. Who knew? )

The Giver (The Giver #1)

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (LHA is amazing. I read The Impossible Knife of Memory earlier this year and was blown away. Speak and Wintergirls are both on my to-read list.)

Speak

Crank by Ellen Hopkins (I’ve heard a lot about Ellen Hopkins and her unconventional writing style.)

Crank (Crank, #1)

Discworld by Terry Pratchett

The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1)

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins (It may have only just been released in the US but I’ve heard so much about this book already. As a fan of Anna and the French Kiss as well as Lola and the Boy Next Door – I’ve heard this book right up my alley!)

Isla and the Happily Ever After (Anna and the French Kiss, #3)

Are there any books people are constantly recommending you read? Any books you would like to recommend that I try? Feel free to leave a comment. Happy Tuesday 🙂

  1. THE SKY SO HEAVY IS AMAZING. You did a great service by leaving it on the train, haha. Speak is also great, although personally I loved Wintergirls a lot more. Don’t know why. Ellen Hopkins is certainly an UNUSUAL writer. I’ve never read anything like her style before.

I’M SO EXCITED FOR ISLA AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. I pre-ordered it, and it should arrive this week sometime (fingers crossed!!).

    • I’m practically stalking the mailbox waiting for the postman to deliver my copy!

And I’m so angry at myself over The Sky So Heavy. I’ve heard the most amazing things about it and so I finally made my way to my favourite bookstore and bought a copy. Then lost it less than an hour later. I have such skillzz… /shifty

I’m excited yet apprehensive about Ellen Hopkins. I want so much to like her books but I’m not sure if I will…

  2. I absolutely loved Speak and Wintergirls. Laurie Halse Anderson is amazing. There are some books on here that I really want to read! I’ve just bought a copy of The Giver actually. I never knew it was a quartet! Oops, where have I been?! 🙂

  3. The Giver! The Giver is one that gets recommended so often that I almost feel guilty for not having read it yet! I do want to try Stephanie Perkins as everyone seems to love her as well. The Miffy books look pretty cute. I have a 4 year old so I’m always looking for new children’s books. I’ll have to look for those next time I’m at the library.

  4. Laurie Halse Andserson is amazing. I read Wintergirls totally on a whim last year for an assignment for my Children’s Lit class and was so surprised with how great it was. The writing style is really unique and works great with the themes in the book.

  5. Miffy is a pretty nostalgic novelty in a lot of stationary I’ve seen sold (or maybe it’s some secret Miffy doppelganger that I’ll never know of). The second installment for The 5th Wave is being release in less than a month so there’s the opportunity to binge both if you end up enjoying the first novel!

  6. The Giver is haunting me. It pops up in every bookstore I visit, on every poster I come across and everybody is talking about it. Miffy is extremely popular in The Netherlands (obviously since the author is Dutch). My favorite nephew is 9 months old and it’s his favorite thing ever. Who doesn’t love a cute rabbit? 🙂

By the way, I’ve nominated you for a Liebster Award because I love your blog: http://brilliantbookshelftheblog.blogspot.nl/2014/08/liebster-award.html
