Armchair BEA: Day 1 – Introductions

Hi there and welcome to my first post for the 2014 Armchair BEA. Armchair BEA is an online event held annually held at the same time as Book Expo America in New York. It’s a chance for bloggers who can’t attend the event to participate in an online convention. I participated in 2012 and enjoyed the chance to meet other book blogger from all around the world who I don’t normally get the chance to interact with. You can learn more about Armchair BEA by checking out the official website.

Each day there are a couple of different topics for participants to blog about which is a great way to mix things up and see what other people are talking about within the book blogging world.

Today I’ll be introducing myself and my blog by answering five questions the lovely people over at Armchair BEA have asked participants to answer.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging? Where in the world are you blogging from?

I’m Kate and I’m from Brisbane, Australia! I’m 26 and currently studying to become a librarian. I’ve been blogging for just over 2 years but only recently move to this current domain. Though goodreads, I discovered there was such a thing as book blogs and had been following a few for a while before I decided that it was something I could do. I don’t think I realized just how much work it would require but nor did I anticipate how rewarding I would find it.

What genre do you read the most? I love to read because ___________________

Young adult novels are the ones that I read the most of – with a special passion for novels by Australian authors. I love to read them because there is a sense that anything can happen. There’s no mistake which is too dire to overcome and there is a sense of hope and optimism despite how dire childhood may have been. I truly believe that a well written young adult can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Share your favourite book or reading related quote.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 books would you bring? Why? What 3 non-book items would you bring? Why?

I could be sensible about this with survival books and items like rope and matches and logical things – but I’ve decided to be a little fanciful with my list:

The Princess Bride by William Goldman – because it’s my favourite book. No matter what mood I’m in, this book has it all. Romance, adventure, sword fighting pirates and a rhyming giant.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand – I started reading this book 12 years ago and still haven’t finished it. I drag it along with me on every holiday I take and have a copy in my car because I hope that if I always have it with me then eventually I’ll finish it. I think it might be a little above my head in terms of what it is really about but now  finishing it is more a matter of pride than anything else.

A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin – I’ve read the first book but they are a lot more complicated than what I normally read and require a lot more concentration. On a deserted island with limited distractions – I may finally get to the end of A Dance of Dragons!

Non book items:
Coffee, mp3 player, camera.
What book would you love to see as a movie?

All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill. This was one of my favourite reads of last year. I’m not normally a fan of time travel novels and whilst I’m not normally a fan of film adaptations of books I’ve adored, I think it’d be great for this book to become a film just because of the exposure that would bring!

I hope you all feel like you know me a little better now. How are you enjoying Armchair BEA so far? IF you are participating, make sure you leave a link to your post in the comments 🙂

  1. Loved reading your intro, Kate! And around every corner I’m reminded that I REALLY need to read Song of Ice and Fire. I have all the books, but thus far I’ve been too intimidated to pick them up. However, I’ve been in a fantasy mood and have polished off Patrick Rothfuss’s The Name of the Wind in just a week, so that gives me hope that I can tackle Game of Thrones soon! Happy Armchair BEA!

  2. Hi Kate! Ah coffee! I still love it but have cut back to only on Saturday and Sunday. Monday through Friday I MUST have my Spark drink!! That stuff is like gold! I have All Our Yesterdays but haven’t read it yet. I may bump it up in the TBR list since you said it would make a great movie.

Enjoy your week of Armchair BEA!

  3. Hi Kate, its great to meet you! I’ve been trying to read more books by Australians and have been participating in the Australian Woman Writers challenge for the past three years. I have family that we recently re-connected with in Sydney and I hope to visit sometime in the next few years. Hope you have a fabulous Armchair BEA!

  4. Hi Kate! It’s nice to see you.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman is one of my favorite reads. It has a little bit of everything in it so it’s always a fun to re-read. Definitely a good pick for a deserted island. The movie is great too!

I still haven’t gotten around to starting Game of Thrones. I can’t watch the TV series until I read the book series. I am in limbo.

What are you looking forward to the most at Armchair BEA this week?

  5. Lovely to meet you Kate & to find another Aussie blogger participating in Armchair BEA (I’ve only found Michael from Lit. Exploration so far).

I’ve read some wonderful Aussie books this year – it’s heartening isn’t it? If only we had a BEA in Australia.
