Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Wish Had Sequels/Spinoffs

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers over at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.

The topic for this week is: Top Ten Books I Wish Had Sequels

After thinking about this for a while, I realized that for most standalone books – I love how they finished. Adding another book would just dilute whatever I thought was so great to begin with. There were a few that I’d love to have a sequel (and I’ll list them here) but for the most part – how awesome would spin offs be? There are so many fantastic secondary characters that I’d love to get to know more about.

Sequels:

The Host by Stephenie Meyer – Ever since this book was first released there was talk about two more books – the Seeker and the Soul. Whilst I think that The Host was a perfect stand alone book… I sort of want to see what happens next. Does true love prevail? (my thoughts… probably). Will Ian get confused considering the body switching (Probably not. But I would like to see him and Jared get into a fight again). Will Wanda find some sort of non-violent passive way to save the world? (probably. And there will be some kind of non-aggressive stand off where everyone wins…). Yay!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – I know there have been many books about Elizabeth and Darcy written by other people putting their own slant on what happens next. And I’ve read a few and even liked many of them. But how fantastic would it be to read it from Ms. Austen’s own hand. I want to know what she thought married life between these two rather headstrong people would have been like.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman – I just finished reading this book and… I don’t ant to leave this world just yet! I’ll wait patiently for a sequel… ok. Maybe not so patiently…

The Princess Bride by William Goldman – Bring on Buttercup’s Baby!

Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta – I’d love a chance to see what Josie’s life was like now.

The Host (The Host, #1) Pride and Prejudice Neverwhere The Princess Bride Looking for Alibrandi

Spin Offs:

Sarah Dessen – I love her books and for the most part I like how everything ends at the conclusion of one of her novels. But HOW AWESOME! would a compilation of novellas be. With just a tiny snapshot of what’s happening to my favourite characters.

Harry Potter – Who would I want to see a spin off in this series? It’s so hard to pick. Dumbledore as a youngster, the Marauders, The Next Generation? So many untold stories that I would love to get to witness as a reader

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – I enjoyed this book. It was slightly bizarre and oh-so heartbreaking. And I wanted to know more. I want to know if Alba (is it just me or does her name remind everyone of Jessica Alba?) manages to have a happy life.

Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead – I love this adult paranormal romance series. I think it’d be fantastic to get to read more about this world of demons and angels. Maybe a story featuring Hugh as a main character, or what Roman’s life is now. Or go back and experience life though Jerome’s eyes. So many choices…

The Heiresses by Allison Rushby – My favourite character in this novel was Aunt Hestia. How fantastic would a story about her and how she became the woman she turned out to be.

The Moon and More Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) The Time Traveler's Wife Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) The Heiresses

That’s my top ten. Now – I know that a lot of them probably wouldn’t be as good with extra instalments. But a girl can live in hope 😀 Hope you’ve all had a great week and I can’t wait to see what sequels you wish had been written!

  1. I think I’d kill for a series on the Marauders (you know, something small… like a carrot) 😀 [Ignore that – I couldn’t resist. If you get it, I’ll love you forever!] Harry Potter made it on my list too – even though I haven’t touched any of Rowling’s other novels, HP will always be my favorite series.

    • I swear I know that quote… was it Spongebob? Or maybe I just have spongebob cause my niece and I were watching it this morning (and by watching it together I mean she was running around the house and I was using the excuse of a 16 month old baby to watch children’s cartoons)

I’ve not read any other JKR books either. Although A Casual Vacancy is sitting next to the TV. I don’t think I’m interested enough in the genres she’s branched out into to really get worked up about them. But the Marauders… how brilliant would that be 😀

  2. I am interested in reading about Wanda and Melanie’s stories in the sequels to The Host, but I thought it was a lovely standalone novel. I don’t want the story to be ruined 🙁
And I agree with you about P&P! An Austen written sequel would have been amazing to read. I want to know what Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s life was like together!
    My Top Ten post 🙂

  3. I absolutely loved, loved, loved The Heiresses by Allison Rushby, can you believe I’m just about to post a review + giveaway this week! Be sure to come and check it out as it’s an Australia only giveaway so more chances for Aussie bloggers 😀

  4. I would have totally loved to read a sequel of Pride and Prejudice (charming, charming Mr. Darcy, awww)! Unfortunately this is only a fantasy 🙁
However, I think I’ll disagree with you about The Host. I found it boring, very slow and I don’t like the “well, the aliens *killed* half the population and now are living in our bodies… we should make peace now and live altogheter” finale. I mean,I understand the love story but don’t agree with the idea behind it. Plus, I didn’t like the writing style either. 😛

    • I can completely understand why you feel like that with The Host. SMeyer seems to polarize people. And your points make perfect sense. IT was boring in parts – why did they take so long to describe the day to day life in the cave? But I really liked some of the character so I try to overlook the boring/unlikable aspects 😛

  5. Ahhh… I could never say no to more Harry Potter. I miss that world so much. And while it’s great rereading the books every couple of years, I do wish I could read a new book set in that magical world 🙁
And while I loved The Host, I think it’s best alone. Meyer didn’t really make the sequels to Twilight work, so I doubt she’d be able to do The Host’s sequel justice.

    • With the Host – I think if she decided to focus on a different set of characters and have Mel,Wanda etc. in the background it might work.

You can only read a book for the first time once. And I agree – rereads of HP are great but nothing quite discovering everything for the first time
      Thanks for visiting!

  6. The Next Generation of HP would be so cool, though Dumbledore’s story has a lot of potential, too. I can’t tell whether you really like THE HOST or really dislike it, haha.

Oh, and a PRIDE AND PREJUDICE sequel written by Jane Austen herself? I wish! That would be amazing!

    • Haha. Sometimes I love the Host and then other times all I can think of are the things that annoy me with it. I think it’s a great idea but I don’t know. There’s just somethings that really bug me.

P&P isn’t my favourite Austen novel (I’m in love with Persuasion) but Elizabeth and Darcy… I just know that things would still be interesting and a bit crazy after getting together! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  7. I believe that Stephanie Meyer is currently working on a sequel to The Host. That’s what I have been hearing around the internet anyway. 🙂 Also, a sequel to Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen would be amazing!!! I am in love with Mr. Darcy. Great list!

    My TTT

    • I hope that’s true. I’ve been hearing that rumour since the Host first came out a few years ago. But I’ll keep my fingers crossed! 😀

Mr Darcy is divine. I’m seriously considering a re-read or at least another viewing of the BBC miniseries!

  8. I love that you split your list between sequels and spin-offs. And I was amazed to see we have 40% of the same choices this week! Clearly we are bookish soul mates. And I adore the idea of a P&P sequel by Austen herself. As much as I love Austen spin-offs, nothing approaches the perfection of her prose.

    • We MUST be bookish soul mates because that’s the same as my thoughts regarding Austen. I like the fan fiction but I’d love to know what she thought would happen next from her own hand!

  9. I would have loved it if Jane Austen wrote a Pride and Prejudice sequel, and I agree, it would be so cool to have little novellas of Sarah Dessen’s characters to see what they’re up to now. I get so excited when I see past character cameos in her new books, but I’d love a novella to hear more about them! 🙂

    Alice @ Alice in Readerland

  10. I saw The Host on quite a few lists this week. I have been meaning to read it! I’ve had it for a while… then wanted to see the movie, but decided not to since I hadn’t read it yet… yet I still haven’t! haha I need to get on that!

    • I think the Host is one that you really need to be in the right mood for. It’s typical SMeyer but I didn’t find the characters as overwhelmingly in love as Twilight. If you do decide to read/watch it – I hope you enjoy it!
