Top Ten Tuesday: Best/Worst Movie Adaptations

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers over at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.

The topic for this week is: Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations (you could pick best or worst OR split it in half)

July 9: Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations (you could pick best or worst OR split it in half)

I nearly always prefer the book to the movie. And when possible I aim to read the novel before watching the film – although I don’t always get there. There are times when I don’t even realize that the theatrical version was original based on a book (like Under the Dome… had no clue that was originally a Stephen King novel).

This week I’ll be splitting my list – Best Five and Worst Five movie adaptations. I recognized that some of these books have multiple movie adaptations so I’m only talking about the film that I’ve linked.
(clicking on the book cover will take you to the book’s goodreads page. Clicking on the movie poster will take you to the film’s IMDB page)

BEST:

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks – I loved how this film added so much more detail to the story with regards to Noah and Allie’s younger selves.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk – The novel is a little erratic and whilst I enjoyed reading it, I preferred how the novel progressed and ended.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

PS. I Love You by Cecilia Ahern – It’s a cute story. And amazingly enough (taking my dislike of Hilary Swank as an actress and the fact they transplanted this novel from Ireland to the US, I really liked how they did the movie)

The Godfather by Mario Puzo – I love this series of movies. They make the book better. And if you haven’t read the book… well they’re still an amazing series of films!

Bridget Jones Diary + Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding – I love Bridget Jones. I thought the books were great but the movies… oh my. It’s the combination of a great Jane Austen modern interpretation mixed with the best cast a chick flick has seen in forever. Love.

WORST:

Avalon High by Meg Cabot – I’m not usually a fan of changing the ending when you go from book to film. And this is one of those cases. And Will Wagner’s accent really irritated me.

Avalon High

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult – They changed the ending! And and… well… I just wasn’t a fan of the casting either.

The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss – This movie didn’t really resemble the book. Maybe I’d lost my childish spirit when I watched this movie but Mike Myers really grated on me.

The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – mostly because I couldn’t stand Eric Bana’s accent but also because this is a fairly difficult one to follow time line wise and the film just… missed a lot. A lot with regards to the main characters lives but practically erased the secondary characters.

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella – It just… didn’t work for me. Becky although a little ditzy in the book just felt more brainless in the film adaptation. Although, I didn’t mind Hugh Dancy as Luke Brandon.

I can’t wait to see what film adaptations people loved or hated this week! I often love Book to TV series more than book to film. But these are just for films.

  1. Agree with you on My Sister’s Keeper. I still can’t believe they changed the ending! It’s also amusing to me that outside of My Sister’s Keeper and To Kill a Mockingbird, I’ve seen all these movies…but haven’t read the books (oops).

  2. To Kill A Mockingbird! Love it. Such a fantastic pair, the movie & book. I feel you on the Dr. Seuss front – what a terrifying adaptation (although I liked The Lorax okay…) Never read The Notebook, but happy to see that after watching the movie the novel will be worth the read 🙂

Great list! Thanks for sharing 🙂
